For those of you wondering if Apple has secretly fixed the iPhone 4 antenna issue with the release of the elusive White iPhone 4. Rest assured, they have not.

I went by the Apple store to run some tests and it turns out that two things are true.

The antenna problem persists. Using the “death grip” or as I like to call it “the way to properly hold a cell phone”, the bars drop anywhere from 2-3. I tested on Rogers network. Pretty sure it doesn’t make a difference, unless your on AT&T in which case it’s much worse.

The White iPhone 4 is actually slightly thicker than the Black iPhone 4. It’s about a half of a millimetre, so it’s barely noticeable but it’s there. Apparently, it’s due to the fact that during manufacturing of the white, an additional coat was required to stop light seepage. Apple doesn’t make note of it in the specifications. Neither would I, it’s too slight to warrant making “official” note of it.

Overall, I’m disappointed with myself for actually entertaining the idea of buying it to replace my black one. It’s the same phone, but white. IMO, white looks dumb with a bumper on it. I was hoping that the antenna issue was secretly fixed in which case I would have opted for a naked white iPhone 4. But seeing as this stupid case has to be on either of them, I’ll keep my money in my pocket… for now.

Oh well.

Apple and Microsoft don’t always play nice. A perfect example is the new Office 2011 for Mac not having any default contextual menus in OS X.

This is a quick way to add a option in the contextual menu to Add as Attachment…

Launch the Automator.app application found in the /Applications folder. You’ll first be asked to choose a template for your workflow. For this simple workflow, we want to select Service. A Service will appear as an item in a contextual menu when you right-click or Control-click something. Click the Choose button to continue.

At the top of the workflow window for Service receives selected followed by a couple of drop-down menus. Set this part of the workflow to read: Service receives selected files or folders in any application.

Locate the Create New Outlook Mail Message action and drag it into the right pane of the Automator window.

The new action will attach itself to the above action. This indicates that anything from the first action, which receives selected files or folders, will be passed along to the second action, which is to create a new Outlook mail message. Congratulations! You’ve just created a workflow!

Select Save from the File menu to save your new Service. Name it something descriptive such as “Attach to email message in Outlook”.

Automator should automagically save the workflow to the ~/Library/Services folder. Restart your Mac and right click on an image, document, whatever.. You should see an option to Attach to email message in Outlook.

Your Billings database folder is located at USER/Library/Application Support/Billings

I simply moved this to my Dropbox folder and then created a symbolic link from the moved folder and then moved this link back to ..Application Support

So when Billings is launched it looks for the billings folder in application support and sees a fake billings folder that actually points to the correct billings folder in the dropbox.

* Creating an alias won’t do the same thing as a symbolic link. To understand how to create a symbolic link go to http://tinyurl.com/cpmoc4

Once you understand what it is, you can use this GUI tool which will add Create Symbolic Link to the contextual menu in OS X.

To install it on Snow Leopard, read below...

1. Open the folder titled “Library” at the root of your boot disk. Make sure there is a folder there named “Services”. If the folder doesn’t exist, then make one with exactly that name (without the quotes, of course). If you are not the system administrator, or you do not want the service to be available to available to all users on the system, then use the Library folder inside your home directory instead.

2. Copy the “SymbolicLinker.service” bundle into the Services folder.

3. Either log out and log back in again, or reboot your computer, or (even easier) run SymbolicLinker.service once by double-clicking on it. Either one of those things will force the OS to update its list of services. SymbolicLinker is programmed to stay in memory for a short period of time, and then automatically quit when it is no longer needed. When it is not running, it will still show up in the services list, so this is a purely memory-saving move.

4. You should also make sure that the service is enabled (sometimes it is by default, sometimes it isn’t). To do that, open System Preferences, open the Keyboard preference pane, open the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, click on Services, and scroll through the list until you see the “Make Symbolic Link” service. If the service is checked, then it will appear in the Finder. If it isn’t, then it won’t.

Description
Dropboxen enables you to run multiple Dropbox clients concurrently by automatically launching multiple instances of Dropbox.exe as different Windows users so Dropbox will store the shared files in each unique Windows user directory.

Usage Instructions

Once downloaded, unzip the files to your Dropbox installation folder. The default Dropbox installation folder is C:\Program Files\Dropbox\.

Open Dropboxen.xml in Notepad (or your favorite text editor) and modify the username and password for each account entry. You have to create the accounts manually in Windows before using this tool. Copy and paste an account line to add more accounts, or just type it out.

To create the Windows user accounts, please follow these simple instructions:

Windows 7

Dropboxen does NOT CURRENTLY WORK on Windows 7 and fails with an “Access is denied” error message (confirmed 30 DEC 2009).

Instead, on Windows 7 or Vista you can run multiple instances of Dropbox simply using the runas command as seen here.

Alternatively, you can install one official copy of Dropbox on your Windows 7 machine and then use DropboxPortable (discontinued, now use DropboxPortableICE) to fire up additional Dropboxes without the need to create additional users. For this to work, you must install an official copy first or else icon overlays and the “Dropbox” context menus may not work. Also make sure you read through until toward the end of the DropboxPortable form post to make sure you’re downloading the latest version of the software.

Note: It is possible, to fix the Access Denied issues by utilizing symbolic links… On Windows 7, I created a new user account, and utilized the “Run as” command to run root:\Users\Newuser\Appdata\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox.exe as ‘Newuser’… While Dropbox was indeed properly syncing the files, when I attempted to open the Dropbox folder using my newly running Dropbox, it tried to open root:\Users\OLDUser\etc… I’m assuming this is a programmatic error with Dropbox… So all I did to fix it, was first I set the Dropbox dir (on the new account – new Dropbox) to root:\Users\Newuser\Documents\Dropbox2\My Dropbox. Secondly I created a sym link from root:\Users\Newuser\Documents\Dropbox2\My Dropbox\ to root:\Users\OLDUser\Documents\Dropbox2\My Dropbox and it works… Albeit a little odd, but it works. I’m not a wiki kinda guy, but I did find a solution here, so I’m sure the author can fix his Program to ‘workaround’ the Dropbox issue by creating a sym link, or he can clean up my article by explaining it better. Another fix would be setting the new Dropbox account somewhere in root… Like C:\Newdropbox\My Dropbox\…

Windows XP

You will need to create a Windows user account on your computer for each Dropbox account that you will be using. For example, if you need to connect to 3 Dropbox accounts, you will create 3 Windows user accounts on your PC. Each user account will have its own “My Dropbox” directory in each user account’s “My Documents” folder.

Windows user accounts can be added through the Windows control panel feature “User Accounts.” Launch the Windows control panel, click “Create a new account” and enter the name of your new Windows account, make sure it has administrator rights, and then click Create Account. Now set a password for this Windows user account by clicking on the account and selecting “Create a password” or else this won’t work. I chose ‘ ‘ (just a single space character) as my password for all accounts just to make it easier on myself, it just cannot be blank. Please note you must log into each new account once for the proper directories to be created.

The process on Vista is similar, just a few things are different.

Dropboxen.xml:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<root>
  <accounts>
    <account username="(windows user account name)" password="(windows user account password)" />
    <account username="(windows user account name 2)" password="(windows user account password 2)" />
  </accounts>
</root>

When I tested this proof of concept, I created three extra Windows usernames: Dropbox001, Dropbox002 and Dropbox003. What Windows username(s) you choose is entirely up to you. Here’s my xml file: Dropboxen.xml:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<root>
  <accounts>
    <account username="(windows user account name)" password="(windows user account password)" />
    <account username="Dropbox001" password=" " />
    <account username="Dropbox002" password=" " />
    <account username="Dropbox003" password=" " />
  </accounts>
</root>

PLEASE NOTE: The “Dropbox001″ and other usernames specified in the XML file are WINDOWS usernames, not Dropbox usernames!

This program requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.

Warning: These tricks have been tested on a Mac OS X so far (including Snow Leopard), with version 0.6.570 of Dropbox.

General idea

The basic idea is to just start Dropbox from the command-line using an alternate home-dir. This will create another Dropbox icon, and another Dropbox folder, which has to be in some other place from the original one. One way to distinguish the two menu bar icons is to change one to Leopard style (black and white) in its Preferences. The two Dropbox folders will both be called Dropbox (this cannot be changed), but you can distinguish them by their location, precisely. Each instance can be used with a different Dropbox account. For instance, I have a personnal Dropbox account and one for professional use. On my laptop, there are separated on two different user accounts, but at home, I would like both on the same user account. Hence, at home, I use the trick below. Technically speaking, this trick could be made an unlimited number of times.

On Mac OS X

Set Up

Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app. Make sure you are running a “bash” shell. If needed, just type:

bash

Then paste the following command:

HOME=$HOME/.dropbox-alt /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox &

Now, you should entering a new Dropbox setup wizard window. A second Dropbox icon should appear on the status bar. Choose an existing account if you have one (different from the original one!) or create a new one. Make sure you choose an alternate location for your new Dropbox folder. If you quit the terminal, the new alternate Dropbox process will also quit. But do not worry! It is set up, and the remaining part of the trick below explains how to restart it with a dedicated little app bundle.

Start automatically on login

There are two methods for this. One method is to create a small app bundle that you then add to startup items. Alternatively, you can use Automator to create an application that runs the bash command above in Terminal.

Automator Method

1. Open Automator from your Applications folder

2. Choose the ‘Application’ template from the template chooser

3. In the Actions Pane on the right side, Choose ‘Library > Utilities’

4. From the next pane choose ‘Run Shell Script’ and drag it into your workflow.

5. In the Run Shell Script text box, paste the command you used above:

bash
HOME=$HOME/.dropbox-alt /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox &

6. Make sure to include the linebreak.

7. Run the script (button on the top right) to make sure it works.

8. Go to File > Save As and save anywhere.

9. Add the resulting application to your Login items.

App Bundle Method

In order to run the second instance automatically on login, you’ll have to create a small app bundle, which you will later add to startup items in the System Preferences “Accounts” pane. Starts by pasting the following command into Terminal. Again, do not include the initial dollar sign of each block:

mkdir -p ~/<whaveter place you like>/DropboxAltStarter.app/Contents/MacOS/

This will create recursively, if they do not exist, the folders “DropboxAltStarter.app”, “Contents” and “MacOS”. If you change the name “DropboxAltStarter” for something else, make sure you change it everywhere relevant in the next lines.

Now, open a text editor, and paste the following code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
    <key>CFBundlePackageType</key>
    <string>APPL</string>
    <key>CFBundleExecutable</key>
    <string>DropboxAltStarter</string>
    <key>LSUIElement</key>
    <string>1</string>
</dict>
</plist>

And save it with the name “Info.plist” (this is crucial, do not choose another name) and save the file inside “DropboxAltStarter.app/Contents”! Now, open a new text file in the text editor, and paste the following text (warning: make sure you remove the leading whitespaces – I had to put one because of wiki formatting):

#!/bin/bash
HOME=/Users/$USER/.dropbox-alt /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox

and save it with the same name as specified in the Info.plist file (i.e. look at the string just below “<key>CFBundleExecutable</key>”). And save the file inside “DropboxAltStarter.app/Contents/MacOS”! (Yes, with “MacOS” this time). You can close your text editor.

Make sure that your script is executable, by typing the following command in a terminal:

chmod 755 ~/<whatever place you like>/DropboxAltStarter.app/Contents/MacOS/DropboxAltStarter

Now, in the “<whaveter place you like>” directory, you have a small Mas OS X app bundle. You can add it to your login items in the System Preferences->Accounts. You can also double-click on it everytime you need to start this second instance of Dropbox (i.e. if it crashed).

On Ubuntu

Note: It doesn’t seem to work with version of 0.7.110 on Ubuntu 9.10

Set Up

Open a terminal or whatever shell. Then paste the following commands:

mkdir $HOME/.dropbox-alt
HOME=$HOME/.dropbox-alt /usr/bin/dropbox start -i

It is set up, and the remaining part of the trick below explains how to restart it with a dedicated script.

Start automatically at boot

For Most Scenarios

edit /etc/rc.local as root (Mac OS X uses /etc/rc.common), then add the following line:

su <user> -c "/home/<user>/.dropbox-alt/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd &"

Where <user> is the username under which you want to run Dropbox.

For More Recent Versions of Linux

Disable the autostart feature of the existing Dropbox account. Then copy your existing credentials to a new folder, like so:

  $ mv .dropbox .dropbox-personal

Create a new script called MultipleDropboxInstances.sh which contains the following:

  #!/bin/bash

  #*******************************
  # Multiple dropbox instances
  #*******************************

  dropboxes=".dropbox-personal .dropbox-work"

  for dropbox in $dropboxes
  do
      HOME=/home/$USER
      if ! [ -d $HOME/$dropbox ];then
          mkdir $HOME/$dropbox 2> /dev/null
          ln -s $HOME/.Xauthority $HOME/$dropbox/ 2> /dev/null
      fi

      HOME=$HOME/$dropbox /usr/bin/dropbox start -i 2> /dev/null &
  done

Give this file executable rights:

  $ chmod +x path/to/your/file

Now add this file to your startup programs. (Note, this can be edited to accommodate as many instances of Dropbox as you wish. Just add an entry in the line defining the directory names: dropboxes=”.dropbox-personal .dropbox-work .dropbox-whatever”.)

This can be done for as many users as you like, provided that they actually exists and that they have Dropbox installed/symlinked in their home folder. You’ll also need to set it up manually the first time, as it requires a graphical interface to link to an account. The above can also be used to auto-start Dropbox on systems which are not running Nautilus as the file manager.
